Arizona Child Dies After Shooting Himself With Father's Misplaced Gun

A 3-year old boy died Friday night after he found his father's misplaced gun and shot himself, the Arizona Star reported.

Police were called to a home in Sahuarita, Ariz., where the boy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Philip Steele, a spokesman for the Sahuarita Police Department.

The child had found his father's gun and shot himself in the face. The firearm was "inadvertently misplaced," according to Steele, and did not have a safety latch.

The shooting was accidental and no one was charged, according to the newspaper.

10-Year-Old Girl Dies After Accidental Shooting During Target Practice

A 10-year-old girl died Monday morning from gunshot wounds she suffered after an accidental shooting the day before, according to West Virginia's Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

Officials initially said that the girl and a 9-year-old boy were doing target practice with a 410 shotgun in Quick Virginia when the shooting occurred, according to West Virginia's MetroNews.

Police said the girl suffered wounds to her chest and arm. The Charleston Gazette reported that an investigation is under way.

Colorado man shoots and kills stepdaughter after mistaking her for a burglar

A 14-year-old Colorado girl was shot and killed by her stepfather early Monday morning after he mistook her for a burglar entering their house.

KOAA-TV reported that police found the girl in the basement, having suffered a gunshot to the chest. She later died at a local hospital.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that the shooting took place around 6 a.m. Monday. Police were initially called to the house to respond to a burglary attempt.

The Associated Press reported that authorities are determining whether the stepfather acted recklessly. The state’s “make my day” law allows homeowners the right to shoot and kill an intruder in self-defense inside their homes if they feel the other person is there to commit a crime and use physical force against them.

Originally known as the Homeowner Protection Act, the law’s nicknames is a reference to Clint Eastwood’s oft-quoted line, “Go ahead, make my day,” from the film Sudden Impact.

No arrests were made at the time of the incident, and the names of the victim and her stepfather were not released, while police and prosecutors continue their respective investigations.

Accidentally shot by an 'otherwise responsible gun owner.' GunFAIL XLIX

Another typical week. Unless you're one of the people who got shot, of course. Statistics-wise, this compilation records five cops as accidentally discharging their weapons, three neat freaks discharging guns they couldn't wait to clean, three generous patriots who shared Freedom Ingots with their neighbors (plus two more who kept it in-house, so to speak), two hunters who became the hunted, and two target shooters who became the targets.

Stories of note this week include two out of Florida, which of course is not at all unusual. One is the story from which our title is derived. In Vero Beach, where a health club owner was accidentally shot by someone showing off his .40-cal Glock to someone interested in buying a gun of his own. He accidentally fired, and put a bullet through the wall, into the owner's office, and... into the owner. How'd you like to be shot at your own fitness center? The big question, though, is what did the guy interested in buying a gun think? Well, because it's Florida, I give even odds that he said, "Awesome! I can't wait to get one of those!" But the kicker, of course, is that the club owner won't be pressing charges, since the gun owner was a friend, and "an otherwise responsible gun owner."

Our second Floridian tale comes from Royal Palm Beach, where an 18-year-old kid who apparently thinks his state's "Make My Day" law is hilarious, decided to try to prank his uncle by jiggling the patio door handle to draw his uncle outside to investigate, and then jump out from a hiding spot to scare him. Well, here we are in GunFAIL, so guess what happened?

Also worth noting: an accidental shooting while an employee was cleaning a gun, during the grand opening of the new, "upscale" Frisco Gun Club in Frisco, TX, and; Philadelphia's second accidental shooting in their SEPTA transit system in the space of a month.

I found six kids accidentally shot last week. Two three-year-olds, a five-year-old, a nine-year-old, a teen of unknown age, and one 17-year-old.

In the guns in school category, we missed one in the last roundup, on December 11th, in Breckenridge Hills, MO. And during the last week, even more turned up, in St. Joseph, MO, Longmont, CO, Florissant, MO, Indianapolis, IN, Round Rock, TX, Oak Ridge, TN, Dorchester, MA, and Chicago, IL.

AUSTIN, TX, 11/18/13: An Austin police officer was given a one-day suspension for accidentally discharging his shotgun. According to a disciplinary memo from APD chief Art Acevedo, police officer Vincent Giles was suspended from duty on Dec. 14 after he "accidentally discharged his shotgun while inspecting the weapon before beginning his tour of duty" on Nov. 18. The disciplinary memo said that this violated APD's general firearm guidelines and safe handling of firearm guidelines.

ROYAL PALM BEACH, FL, 11/26/13: A deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office substation in Royal Palm Beach was dispatched to a home on Sparrow Drive last Tuesday night regarding a shooting. According to a PBSO report, the 18-year-old victim is a nephew of the shooter. He decided at approximately 11:15 p.m. to scare his uncle by jiggling the patio door handle. According to the report, the shooter heard the sound and retrieved his rifle before going to investigate the noise. When the victim saw his uncle come out onto the patio, he jumped out to scare him. According to the report, his uncle was startled and discharged the rifle, shooting the victim in his left thigh just above his knee. The victim was transported to Palms West Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. There was no further information available at the time of the report.

ELMWOOD PARK, IL, 12/07/13: While cleaning his pistol in his living room of his residence on 7900 block of Belmont Avenue at 3:46 a.m. Dec. 7, the gun discharged, firing a shot through the front window. The owner of gun reported to police that he thought the gun was empty when he began cleaning it. No one was injured.

DANIELSVILLE, GA, 12/09/13: On Dec. 9, a deputy was dispatched to a home on Young Harris Road, where a man said he was cleaning his 9mm pistol, but didn’t realize there was a bullet in the gun. The gun fired and the bullet hit the man’s index finger. The man was transported by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center.

GROVE CITY, OH, 12/12/13: A Grove City teenager last week accidentally shot his sister in the leg with their mother's gun, Grove City police reported. According to reports, a 17-year-old male resident of the family home in the 2700 block of Walden Bluff Court was playing around with the handgun about 5:30 p.m. Dec. 12, in a bedroom with his sister, girlfriend and another friend. He believed it was unloaded when he pulled the trigger, but the gun discharged and the bullet hit his sister in the right upper thigh. The group then drove to Mount Carmel West Hospital, where the sister was treated, and police were contacted. The 17-year-old initially told police the gun had gone off when he set a box down on the night stand, but he later admitted he had pulled the trigger. He told police he had assumed the gun was unloaded and he had not intentionally shot her.

VERO BEACH, FL, 12/13/13: The owner of a fitness center is recovering from a gunshot wound to his legs, he said. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and Indian River County Fire Rescue went to Longevity Max Fitness, 970 14th Lane, Vero Beach, about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13 for the incident that was considered an accidental shooting. The center’s owner, Steve Pfiester, 43, was in his office when the .40-caliber Glock, held by its owner in a next-door locker room, fired and went through the wall, according to a sheriff’s incident report. The bullet went through Pfiester’s right leg and grazed his left leg, Sheriff’s Office officials said. Pfiester described the shooting as a freak accident. He told authorities he did not want the case prosecuted and he considered his friend to be an otherwise responsible gun owner. The gun owner told deputies he was showing the weapon to someone who was interested in buying one.

GREENEVILLE, TN, 12/13/13: A 13-year-old suffered a minor leg wound Friday after his father's gun accidentally discharged inside a house at 330 Tom White Hollow Road. Sheriff's deputies responded to Laughlin Memorial Hospital on a report of a gunshot victim and found Michael L. James "with a bullet wound to the back of his right leg," Deputy Toby Price said in a report. The boy's father, Landon James, told deputies that he had just shot an opossum "and laid his .22-caliber revolver pistol on the table to pick up the opossum," the report said.

FRISCO, TX, 12/14/13: There was an accidental shooting Saturday night at the new Frisco Gun Club. An employee was cleaning a gun for a patron when it discharged, wounding the employee in the hand. That person was taken to a hospital for treatment. This is the grand opening weekend for the Frisco Gun Club on El Dorado Parkway just east of the Dallas North Tollway. It calls itself the nation's largest indoor shooting range, and includes luxury features for members.

DENTON, TX, 12/14/13: A man was transported to Denton Regional Medical Center after a .22-caliber Magnum handgun discharged in his jacket pocket and he sustained an injury to his leg early Saturday morning. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of Audra Lane. The man told police that he had the gun in his jacket pocket and when he put his hand in his pocket, the gun fired. When officers arrived, they found that the man had wrapped his jacket around his leg and tightened it with a belt to act as a bandage. Police reported that the man was alert and talking and said that the shot was accidental.

MELCHER-DALLAS, IA, 12/14/13: State officials say a Cedar Rapids man shot himself in the kneecap while hunting in central Iowa. The Department of Natural Resources says 37-year-old Charles T. Nolte was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines on Saturday with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say Nolte's shotgun discharged while he was putting on his gloves before 1 p.m. Saturday. He was hunting in an area southwest of Melcher-Dallas, in Marion County.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA, 12/14/13: Fredericksburg police were investigating a Saturday night incident in which at least one shot was fired into a city residence. No one was injured, though two children were in a room where a bullet was found, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. The shooting occurred at 8:40 p.m. in the 200 block of Harris Street in the Mayfield subdivision, Bledsoe said. A witness reported hearing about five shots, but as of about an hour after the shooting police had only found one. That shot had gone through a window and an interior wall before coming to rest in the room with the children. In addition to the children, whose ages were not available, at least one adult woman was in the home. The initial 911 call came from the residence, Bledsoe said.

THE DALLES, OR, 12/14/13: A woman called city police at 2:45 a.m. Saturday to report that someone had entered her home in the 3300 block of West Seventh Street, shot a gun into her son’s room and ran out the back door. She said her son was unhurt and nothing was missing from the house. A The Dalles police officer arrived and noted in the police log that “it was clear the [son] was not being honest.” The son then admitted he was actually cleaning a gun and it went off. He told police he then stashed the gun and lied to his mother about a person entering the house. Officers seized the gun and were forwarding their report to the district attorney’s office for review.

CROSSVILLE, TN, 12/14/13: A Crossville man was accidently shot in the foot when looking at a rifle being held by a coworker, according to Cumberland County Sheriff's Department reports. Both men reportedly were drinking at the time of the incident, the report states. The incident took place Saturday around 8 p.m. in a wooded area off the end of Interstate Dr., according to Cpl. Tim Tutor's report. Tutor responded to the report of a shooting and was met by Mark Pryor, 42, of Sylvester Davis Dr., who told him that he and James A. Taylor, 50, Wilson Rd., were watchmen for equipment on a logging job. Taylor said he was showing a .22 rifle to Pryor when the gun accidentally discharged, striking Pryor in the foot.

RICHMOND, CA, 12/14/13: The family of a Richmond teen struck by stray bullet over the weekend said on Monday that she was paralyzed from her injuries. Richmond Police told KTVU that 19-year-old Dominique Romero was sitting on the couch inside her home on Waller Avenue Saturday night when someone fired multiple shots in the street. One of the bullets punched through the wall of the house, slammed through the teen's arm and wedged in her spine. The girl's mother said doctors at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek told the teen and her family on Monday that she is paralyzed from the waist down. Richmond police said they have yet to track down the person who fired as many as nine shots that night.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ, 12/15/13: An off-duty police officer was wounded after an accidental shooting at a home in Camden County, New Jersey. It happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. Sunday at a home along Bromley Drive in Gloucester Township. Police say an off-duty Gloucester Township Police officer was unloading a personally owned pistol, when the gun accidentally discharged. The officer suffered a minor wound to the hand. No one else was injured.

COLUMBIA, TN, 12/15/13: A Maury County man was killed after a stray bullet struck him inside of his apartment. Officials with the Columbia Police Department said 19-year-old James Tyler Wisdom was fatally struck by a stray bullet just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning. They said he was found deceased in the kitchen of his apartment, located at 2228 Union Place in Columbia. Police said the victim's roommate, 24-year-old Ryan Frederick, was handling a pistol in an upstairs bedroom when the gun accidentally discharged. They said the bullet traveled through the floor and fatally struck the victim.

DEKALB CO., GA, 12/15/13: A five year old girl is recovering after a bullet hit her in the shoulder as she stood in an apartment watching a gun fight outside. It happened Sunday night at the Highland Apartments on Flat Shoals Road. Police say the little girl was standing at a window watching two people shooting at each other in the parking lot when one of their bullets pierced her window and hit her. When investigators arrived they say the suspects had taken off. Officers spent several hours collecting evidence including multiple shell casings in the parking lot and talking to neighbors.

SHREVEPORT, LA, 12/15/13: One Shreveport man is in jail and his friend is in the hospital after a shooting early Sunday morning that injured both of them. Shreveport police say it happened just after 3 a.m. Police were called to Willis Knighton North after the men showed up in the emergency room with gunshot wounds. Both 19-year-old Gary McCain and Darien Adams, age unavailable, were treated for injuries that are described by police as non-life-threatening. Upon further investigation, police say they believe the shooting appears to have stemmed from a physical dispute involving McCain and Adams "a group of offenders known to both men." While it's not yet clear who shot Adams or whether there was an exchange of gunfire between the two men and the other group, police say their preliminary information suggests that Adams was accidentally shot in the hip by McCain.

CAMBRIDGE, MD, 12/15/13: A Cambridge man accidentally shot himself in the shoulder here Sunday evening, Dec. 15. The 20-year-old man, whose name was not released by Cambridge police, was transported to an area hospital, police said, where he was treated for his injury and later released. Cambridge police responded to a 911 call at 7:49 p.m. Sunday about a person being shot in the 400-block of Muir Street. Police said they learned the gun went off accidentally while the man was handling it and that a single round had been discharged into the man’s shoulder.

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, PA, 12/15/13: A teenager told state police that it was an accident when he hit a Tionesta man's vehicle with a round of rifle fire on Sunday along Fogel Farm Road, in Harmony Township. State police in Marienville report that the 16-year-old boy shot the rear window and entered the passenger compartment of David Rankin's vehicle as he was traveling along Fogel Farm Road. Rankin was not injured. According to police, the boy reported that the gun discharged accidentally.

ST. PAUL, MN, 12/16/13: A 14-year-old boy is recovering from a bullet wound after what appears to be an accidental shooting in St. Paul Monday night. St. Paul Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos says the victim was shot in the stomach by his 15-year-old friend around 7 p.m. on the 800 block of West Nebraska Avenue in St. Paul. The teen was rushed to the hospital, where no word on his condition is available.

PLAISTOW, NH, 12/16/13: A Haverhill man was arrested Monday after accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the leg. Police responded to 3 Dauntless Lane at around 9:15 p.m. Monday night after a report of a gunshot wound. When police responded, they found Joshua Thompson, 22, of Haverhill and a 19-year-old Plaistow woman with a gunshot wound to her leg. “We believe it was an accidental discharge,” Deputy police Chief Kathleen Jones said. “He dropped it and it went off.”

FAIRMONT, NC, 12/16/13: Negotiations between two men over the purchase of a firearm Monday turned deadly when the gun discharged during a struggle, fatally wounding a Fairmont man, authorities said. The shooting happened about 7:35 p.m. near Stephens Avenue and the 400 block of North Main Street, said Chief Danny Parker of the Fairmont Department of Public Safety. Travis Brown, 33, of 21 Sweetheart Drive, was shot in the abdomen and died while undergoing surgery at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Parker said. Reginald Barney, 25, of Newport News, Va., was arrested Wednesday night and charged with second-degree murder, Parker said. Brown and Barney did not know each other, Parker said. During the transaction, the men began fighting, Parker said, and the gun discharged, striking Brown in the abdomen.

BRIDGEPORT, CT, 12/17/13: A Bridgeport police officer was taken to the hospital suffering from a single gunshot wound this morning. The incident happened at the Bagel King, on Main St. The officer, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Police said the incident is being investigated as an accidental discharge at this time. Witnesses tell News 8's Stephanie Simoni the officer shot himself by accident in the leg. UPDATE: The incident took place around 9 a.m. while several patrons were enjoying breakfast. Based on interviews, Hearst Connecticut Newspapers was able to piece together the following scenario. A second officer, who the department has not yet identified, was returning the .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol that he had borrowed from a friend when Santiago picked the gun off the table they were sitting at. "It was on the table and he picked it up and cocked it," said the gun owner, a doctor who asked not to be identified. "It wasn't loaded but there was a magazine in it and when he cocked it a bullet moved into the chamber. He pointed it at the floor and he pulled the trigger." The bullet ricocheted upwards piercing Santiago's leg before shattering a nearby window.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, 12/17/13: Indianapolis Metropolitan Police say an 18-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the head at a home on the city's west side late Tuesday. Investigators say they think the man may have been drinking when the gun went off inside a home on Centennial Avenue. The scene is near West 16th Street and North Tibbs Avenue. Police say the man was awake and talking when officers arrived.

IVESDALE, IL, 12/17/13: Douglas County authorities believe a rural Ivesdale man killed himself inside his home in the northwest corner of the county late Tuesday afternoon after accidentally shooting his wife in the hand. Douglas County Chief Deputy Peter Buckley identified the man as Terry Rexroad, 45, who lived at 95 E on County Road 1550 N, the road between Champaign and Douglas counties, about 4 miles south of Ivesdale. Mr. Rexroad's estranged wife, Theresa Rexroad, 41, called for help about 3:30 p.m. after having been shot in the hand in a struggle in the house. Buckley said Theresa Rexroad, who was living in Atwood, stopped by the house to drop something off earlier in the day. Once she was there, Buckley said, Mr. Rexroad began talking about harming himself. "She said 'I'm going to call 911' and takes out a cellphone. There is a struggle for the phone and he's holding a gun in his hand and inadvertently shot her in the hand," Buckley said.

CINCINNATI, OH, 12/17/13: Police have arrested the mother of a 3-year-old girl for falsification and the mother’s boyfriend for accidently shooting the child Thursday. Cincinnati Police District 4 Capt. Mike Neville confirmed to WCPO the mother of L’eah Johnson, Ebony McDavis, falsified the story of taking out the garbage at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday at the Colonial Village apartment complex on Tacoma Avenue in Avondale. McDavis’ boyfriend, Cordero Warren, 24, was arrested for tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm under disability, a third-degree felony. Police allege McDavis, 28, misled investigators as she told police Warren was carrying Johnson when he was taking out the garbage and the child was struck by gunfire. Several 911 calls were placed at the time of the accidental shooting, reporting gunfire in the area but “they were not related to the child’s injury,” police said in a prepared statement. McDavis eventually admitted to making up the story during subsequent interviews with police. “It was an accident and she created an entire convoluted story for that reason,” Neville told WCPO. Johnson was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for surgery and she is expected to recover.

LANCASTER, PA, 12/17/13: Police say a Lancaster city woman pulled a gun as she argued with her husband Tuesday morning and it fired as the couple fought for control of it. A bullet struck one of the man's fingers. Police charged 51-year-old Lisa Helen Nogueras with aggravated assault after the 7:45 a.m. confrontation at the home in the 500 block of Burrowes Avenue, city police Lt. Todd Umstead said. The couple were arguing and fighting when Nogueras pulled the semiautomatic handgun, Umstead said. Her husband tried to grab it from her and the gun discharged. The 48-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his left pinkie finger and was taken to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment.

BRADENTON, FL, 12/17/13: A Florida man shot himself in the foot this week. Investigators didn’t buy the man’s story that he had been shot while walking on Manatee Avenue, Bradenton.com reported. “Deputies attempted to find the crime scene but were unsuccessful,” according to the report. “ The victim’s account does not match the evidence.” The man, who was not identified, was treated Tuesday night ay Blake Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the foot. The police report indicated it may have been self-inflicted.

MAHASKA CO., IA, 12/18/13: Rescue workers responded to a call of an injured individual at the Hull Shooting Range located 4 miles west of Oskaloosa Wednesday afternoon. Paramedics and Mahaska County Deputies responded after being informed about the injury by another user of the range. The yet unidentified victim was transported by Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Services to the hospital where they were then transported via Mercy One air ambulance. According to Mahaska County Sheriff Paul DeGeest, the victim was by himself and authorities are unsure how long the victim had been injured before being discovered. UPDATE: He didn't make it. 73-year-old Dan Karow of Oskaloosa appeared to be unloading a revolver when it went off, striking him in the stomach. Another resident who had come to the range to shoot discovered the injured Karow lying on the ground.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, 12/18/13: An unidentified man reportedly shot himself in the hand on a SEPTA bus Wednesday evening in the city's East Germantown section, police said. The incident happened about 6:15 p.m. on a Route K bus at Chelten Avenue and Musgrave Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The bus driver did not know that something had occurred until he completed his route. A passenger leaving the bus told the driver that a man accidentally shot himself and then got off at a stop. Police found some drops of blood on the bus and were expected to check surveillance video to see if they could get a clear image of the man, Small said.

PORTSMOUTH, NH, 12/18/13: Police were called to a White Cedar Boulevard residence on Wednesday by a man who said he accidentally fired a shotgun inside his home. Police Sgt. David Keaveny said the resident reported the accidental discharge at 5:55 p.m. and that no one was hurt. Responding officers found a wall damaged by the shotgun discharge at the home which is in a condominium development known as The Cedars, he said. Keaveny said it’s unknown why the resident pulled the trigger, but he told police he’d been duck hunting and forgot to unload a cartridge from the long gun after the hunting trip. According to the police sergeant, the man notified police about the incident, explained what happened and was not impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time. “It appears accidental,” Keaveny said, adding that police will continue to investigate and make a determination about whether or not to charge the hunter with a crime.

BRONX, NY, 12/18/13: A 9-year-old boy was shot in the foot in the Crotona Park East section of the Bronx. Witnesses say the street was covered with kids heading home from school. That's just what the 9-year-old boy was doing. Right now he's recovering at Jacobi Hospital, his injuries are not life threatening. Witnesses say two men were arguing outside a bodega at East 175th Street and Prospect Avenue, one had a gun. Detectives believe during the dispute the armed man accidentally fired a shot, hitting the child's left foot. "He told me he was shot. He said, 'I'm shot, I'm shot,'" the victim's cousin said. "Did he say anything else?" Eyewitness News asked. "He was very afraid for his life. He told me, 'This is the first time I've ever got shot.'

NEW ORLEANS, LA, 12/18/13: New Orleans authorities say a gun discharged as a police officer struggled with a teenage suspect he had been chasing, wounding the suspect in the groin and the police officer in the ankle. Police say it happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday in eastern New Orleans. Police had received calls about loitering and suspicious activity in the area. When patrol officers approached two people loitering near a store, one suspect ran away but tripped and fell. When an officer caught up to him, a struggle began. Police say the suspect had a gun, which discharged during the struggle. Police said the 17-year-old suspect was hospitalized in stable condition.

PALM BEACH CO., FL, 12/19/13: A man was injured this afternoon after he accidentally shot himself while on Florida’s Turnpike in northern Palm Beach County. Florida Highway Patrol and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews were called around 4:50 p.m. to the turnpike’s southbound lanes at the Indiantown Road exit in response to the shooting. A man accidentally shot himself in the leg. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, said FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky. Wysocky did not immediately know if the man was driving at the time.

NAIRN, LA, 12/19/13: An 18-year-old man hog hunting with two close friends accidentally shot them when he mistook them for the hogs he sought, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Lonnie Greco said. The shots from the shotgun of Willie Evans struck and killed 18-year-old Galen Scott and injured 17-year-old Cody Jones. The incident occurred Thursday around 5:45 p.m. in Nairn, just south of Port Sulphur. According to Greco, deputies received a call of two people shot in Nairn and those who arrived on the scene found Scott suffering from wounds to the head and leg, he was pronounced dead on the scene. Jones was shot in the legs and was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery. Greco said that based on interviews with Evans, Jones and other witnesses, it appears that the three friends went hog hunting in a wooded area and that prior to the trip, they had smoked marijuana. After the sun had set, Greco said that Scott and Jones began walking towards Evans and that he observed two objects about 75 feet away and, thinking they were the hogs they sought, he fired back-to-back rounds of buckshot from his gun, striking both young men.

RAPID CITY, SD, 12/19/13: A witness heard a gunshot when a suspected robber slipped on the ice outside Toby's Casino at 720 East North St. at 9:20 p.m. Thursday. The armed man reportedly fled the casino after threatening a female clerk with a handgun and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police. The 52-year-old clerk was not injured. According to the witness, the gun fired when the suspect fell on the icy, snow-covered parking lot outside the casino.

SAHUARITA, AZ, 12/20/13: A 3-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself with his parent's gun. Officer Philip Steele with Sahuarita Police tells KGUN9 that officers responded to a call in the 300 block of Calle Minerva, around 7:45 p.m on Friday. When officers arrived on scene, the boy was found with a self-inflicted gunshot would to the face. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, said Steele. The parents told officers the firearm was misplaced for a short time, during which the child found and fatally discharged the weapon.

BRADENTON, FL, 12/20/13: A man was hospitalized Friday night after he was shot by a person who was showing off a handgun, according to Bradenton police. Authorities received "numerous 911 calls" about an armed subject in front of a residence in the 2200 block of 15th Avenue East around 11:09 p.m., according to a police report. Arriving officers found the male victim inside with a single gunshot wound to the middle torso area. Investigators say the suspect was showing the handgun off to the victim when it went off.

AMES, IA, 12/20/13: Police say one person is dead following what has been described as an accidental shooting in Ames. Officers were called to a house on the west side of Ames around 10:30 p.m. Friday and found Devlin Lockman, 38, with a gunshot wound to his head. Lockman lived at the house. The injured person was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center, where he died. "At this point, it appears that this was a tragic accident," said Ames Police Cmdr. Geoff Huff in a news release. MORE: Witnesses say 38-year-old Devlin Lockman accidentally shot himself in the head with a semi-automatic 9mm handgun.

LOWER GWYNEDD TOWNSHIP, PA, 12/20/13: A Lower Gwynedd police officer accidentally fired his gun while officers responded to a disturbance in which a man pointed his gun at officers during the early morning hours of Dec. 20. The incident began when Lower Gwynedd police were dispatched to a report of a reckless driver traveling north on Bethlehem Pike, according to a press release from the Lower Gwynedd Police Department. Lower Gwynedd police located the vehicle, which was unoccupied, parked in the driveway of a home currently under construction on the 600 block of Montgomery Road and were joined at the scene by officers from Upper Dublin, according to the complaint. As officers searched the outside of the house, they observed a person lying on the floor of a front room, police said. When police identified themselves, Bridges stood up, got a “dark colored revolver” from a closet and pointed it at an officer, according to police. As the officer was retreating for cover, he slipped on ice and fell, unintentionally firing his gun, police said. The one round discharged from the weapon struck the house.

Some ass got shot at the Home Depot! And it was attached to a concealed carrier, too. GunFAIL L

You'd think Christmas week would be a slow week for GunFAIL incidents. But all that actually slowed down was the number of guns found in schools, since most schools were closed for the better part of the week, if not all week long. Instead, those kids were at home, in some cases, with nothing better to do than accidentally shoot one another, or get accidentally shot. In fact, I found fifteen kids who were accidentally shot last week. And in a bizarre, if not particularly significant twist, six of them were 14-year-olds. Shockingly, we also saw our record for the youngest GunFAIL victim shattered, when an infant of just 2 months of age was accidentally shot and killed in East Lampeter, PA. The other child victims of GunFAIL last week were aged 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17 and 17.

Among our other running statistical categories, two cops were involved in GunFAIL incidents, as were four target/recreational shooters, and five hunters. Six gun owners gave their neighbors the opportunity to greet their bullets as liberators, and six more freed their bullets from the bonds of captivity while cleaning their guns. Finally, two more awesome Minute Men accidentally discharged their weapons in retail stores and restaurants last week, scoring direct hits on one counter and one (undoubtedly red, white and blue) ass cheek.

Also of special note from last week: the Pennsylvania man who decided to punctuate a domestic argument by pounding a rifle on the floor, which then discharged and shot his daughter, upstairs, and; the Colorado man who mistook his 14-year-old step-daughter for an intruder and shot her to death as she tried to sneak back into the house. But that was only the first of two GunFAILs in Colorado Springs for the week. It's a relatively GunFAIL-y place, actually. These two incidents are their 13th and 14th appearances in our lists. But that's over only 10 weekly lists. In other words, this is actually the third time Colorado Springs has appeared more than once inside of a single week's list.

If you were on the lookout for the first clearly-labeled Christmas gift gun to end up accidentally shooting someone, I think we have it here, in the Kentucky man who shot himself cleaning the pistol he gave his girlfriend as a gift. I don't know how badly it could have needed a cleaning after only two days of ownership. But then again, if they were out shooting it already because they were so excited about it, then it's hard to understand why he wouldn't have checked to see if it was loaded before cleaning it. Then again, it's something you're really supposed to do every time, anyway.

But if everybody did what they were supposed to do, every time, this list would presumably be a lot shorter. And it isn't. And if you have any doubts about its future, search the #AR15 hashtag on Twitter for pictures of people posing in their homes with their brand new rifles, very often with their fingers on the trigger. Or better yet, see for yourself by scrolling back to Christmas day in Brandon Friedman's Twitter feed. You might also note the number of such rifles presented as gifts (at some rather steep prices, too), versus, say, the number of them confiscated by Obama.

Anyway, no, the list is not particularly short. So without further ado, I present it to you, below the fold.

PORT CLINTON, OH, 11/11/13: An Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office deputy assigned as a corrections officer discharged a firearm inside the Ottawa County Detention Facility on Nov. 11, according to OCSO reports. The reports say Deputy Matt Gandee was showing a Springfield XDM semi-automatic handgun to another deputy, who was thinking about buying a similar model, when the incident occurred. The reports say Gandee had retrieved the weapon from a personal vehicle to show it to the other deputy. A single round was fired into a metal gun locker after Gandee pulled the trigger as he was showing the other officer how the safety features on the weapon worked. The bullet lodged inside a gun locker near the deputies, according to the reports. Neither deputy was injured, though both reported severe ringing in their ears, the reports said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 12/14/13: A teenage boy who was shot dead in San Francisco this month was slain not by an enemy but by an accomplice in a street robbery, after a bullet fired at the victim ricocheted off his face, police said Friday. Officials released the shocking details of the death of 16-year-old Clifton Chatman while announcing the arrest of one of the alleged thieves, who is also 16, on suspicion of murder and attempted robbery. Due to his age, the suspect was not identified. Police did not say whether they believed he was the shooter. The incident happened Dec. 14 near the Alemany public housing complex in Bernal Heights. Police said a group of suspects accosted a man at about 11 p.m., and that as they dug through the victim's possessions and took his phone, one of them pulled out a handgun. The victim did not resist and complied with all demands, police said, but the gunman still opened fire. The bullet, though, glanced off the victim's face and struck Chatman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The target of the robbery was hospitalized, but is expected to survive.

KODIAK, AK, 12/19/13: While out driving, the two individuals began to consume alcohol. According to Spokeswoman Beth Ipsen, "The driver was operating the vehicle with one hand on the wheel and was handling the cocked and loaded firearm with the other hand, when it accidentally discharged, striking him in the knee." As a result of the firearm discharge, the passenger was also struck by shrapnel from the blast.

BEREA, OH, 12/20/13: A man called police Dec. 20 at 8:35 a.m. to report an accidental shooting. The man said he accidentally shot himself in the left knee area while putting his gun away. The man said he had ejected a magazine and thought his Walther handgun was unloaded when it shot him. Berea Fire Department paramedics transported the man to a hospital for treatment.

BODFISH, CA, 12/20/13: The Bodfish man found dead in his booby-trapped home last weekend died of an accidental shotgun wound to the torso, according to a coroner's report released Friday. Paul Edward Morningstar, 66, was found Sunday in his Bodfish home, which had been rigged with multiple explosive devices. Sheriff's officials say they attempted to check Morningstar on Friday, Dec. 20, when neighbors reported hearing a loud "boom." A robot was unable to detect a body inside Morningstar's home that night, but did find explosive devices. A bomb squad entered the residence the next day to disarm any explovsives and located the 66-year-old. Neighbors described Morningstar as an "old hippy," eccentric, quiet and friendly.

EL PASO CO., CO, 12/21/13: The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is on the scene of an accidental shooting. The call for help came in around 2 p.m. Saturday. According to a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, a man was doing some recreational shooting off Mount Herman Road when he shot himself in the leg. The man was taken to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries is not immediately clear. According to the U.S. Forest Service, there is an area west of Monument off Mount Herman Road that is approved for recreation/target shooting.

QUICK, WV, 12/21/13: A ten-year-old girl accidentally shot during target practice is now undergoing surgery. It happened about 5:30 p.m. Sunday on Pentacre Road near Quick, W.Va. Sheriff's deputies say the girl and a nine-year-old boy were target practicing with a shotgun near a creek when the shooting happened. The girl's arm and chest were injured. She was taken to CAMC General where she was taken into surgery. There's no word on her name or condition at this time. UPDATE: Her name was Payton Thomas. And she didn't make it.

LASDON, SC, 12/21/13: A North Charleston firefighter was injured Saturday night in an incident that is being described as an accident involving a firearm, the department's spokeswoman said Sunday. The firefighter was off duty at the time, North Charleston Fire spokeswoman Bianca Bourbeau. She referred questions to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to a house on Cohen Circle about 7 p.m. Saturday, sheriff's office spokesman Dan Moon said. They found that a man was cleaning a gun and shot himself in the hand. The bullet went through his hand and hit his brother, a firefighter, in the leg. The bullet apparently severed an artery, causing extensive bleeding. The firefighter was taken to a hospital and remained in intensive care Sunday, Moon said. No further investigation is planned, he said.

MORENO VALLEY, CA, 12/21/13: A man was killed Saturday, Dec. 21 in an apparent shooting accident near Moreno Valley, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. Officers responded to a 911 call at Reche Canyon Road and Locust Avenue, in an unincorporated area of Riverside County. They found a man with a gunshot wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he died. The name of the man has not yet been released. Police say the man and another male friend were in the county area shooting rifles Saturday morning when one of the guns discharged and hit the victim. The friend called 911 to say the man had been shot.

TRINITY, TX, 12/21/13: A trinity police officer is recovering in a Tyler hospital after a firearm discharged while on the way to a felony arrest Saturday night. According to Trinity Police Chief Steve Jones, Officer Travis Bryan was going to help serve a warrant at a home on N. Clegg Road. Jones said while on the way, the patrol unit made a quick turn, causing a shotgun in the vehicle to shift and discharge. "When the weapon discharged, the bullet grazed the foot of Officer Bryan," Jones said. "Officer Bryan had to have his pinky toe amputated when he arrived at the hospital." Jones said that at this time, the department is investigating the incident. "We are looking into three possibilities," Jones said. "We don't know if it was a mistake by the officer. We don't know if the weapon could have malfunctioned and discharged. Another possibility is that something could have got caught on the trigger when the gun shifted, causing the discharge."

JEFFERSON CO., AL, 12/21/13: Roosevelt Parker Jr., 52, was fatally shot early Saturday at a business in the 1200 block of Center Point Parkway. His nephew, 28-year-old Marcus Jarell White, turned himself into the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and was charged with murder. Chief Deputy Randy Christian on Monday released more information about the deadly shooting and two stabbings that took place there. It was an adult birthday party being held at a business that had been rented out for the event. Two people crashed the party, and a fight broke out when they were asked to leave about 1:30 a.m. During the fight, the two party-crashers were stabbed, Christian said. They went back into the party again. Next, White came in through the back door aiming for the stabbed party-crashers. He fired at them, but instead killed his uncle, who was found in the front parking lot.

SIOUX FALLS, SD, 12/21/13: A Sioux Falls man accused of accidentally firing a gunshot that narrowly missed two people in a neighboring apartment was arrested Saturday morning on gun charges. Anthony Steven Pier, 24, faces reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of firearm while intoxicated charges. Both are misdemeanors. The incident occurred after Pier was picked up from a bar by a friend and taken back to his apartment at 4004 S. Louise Avenue, police spokesman Sam Clemens said. Once at the apartment, the friend asked Pier if he could have his handgun for safe keeping to ensure there wouldn’t be any problems that night. The friend told police he asked for the gun because Pier had been feeling depressed and thought that he could have potentially been suicidal. Around 12:30 a.m., Pier, who was intoxicated at the time, attempted to clear the handgun before handing it over. As he was attempting to eject a round, Pier, who had his hand on the trigger, accidentally fired a round, Clemens said. “That round went through a neighboring apartment, narrowly missing the person in that apartment,” Clemens said. “The bullet then continued into another apartment, again, narrowly missed another person.” The bullet ended up coming to rest inside that third apartment, Clemens said. Police determined the shot was fired accidentally.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 12/22/13: An Oklahoma City man is injured after he accidentally shot himself Sunday afternoon. According to police, officers responded to the incident in the 1200 block of Northgate Terrace. Police say a man was showing his grandpa a gun. But he didn't know it was loaded and accidentally shot himself in the foot. The man has been transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

MONTERREY CO., CA, 12/22/13: A Fresno woman was accidentally shot by a relative during a hunting outing in Los Padres National Forest, Monterey County Sheriff's deputies reported Monday. Officials said Zoua Lo Xiong was shot about 10 a.m. Sunday at Botchers Gap. Deputies said Xiong was not wearing brightly colored safety gear and "blended into the scenery." The shooter did not realize his relative had been shot until she cried out, deputies said. Xiong suffered entry wounds to the face, head, upper back and left arm, but was conscious and able to speak when she was taken to a local hospital, officials said. MORE: They're sisters-in-law.

DERRY TOWNSHIP, PA, 12/22/13: An 11-year-old girl was shot in her leg and foot on Sunday night while she was sitting on the floor of an upstairs bedroom in a Derry Township home. The bullet discharged when Thomas Eric Furin, 36, allegedly banged a rifle against the floor downstairs during an argument with his girlfriend, the child's mother, police said. The rifle went off and “the bullet traveled through the ceiling into an upstairs bedroom,” through the girl's right foot and left thigh as she sat cross-legged and then through the bedroom's ceiling and attic.

CHARLOTTE, NC, 12/22/13: A Charlotte woman said she was afraid for her life and gunfire erupted outside her home. Bendetta Brown said the bullet sounded more like a bomb exploding through her house. Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Brown, her daughter and elderly mother were all asleep when gunshots were fired behind her north Charlotte home. Brown said one of the bullets tore through her bedroom wall just inches away from her bed. "One, two, three and that fourth shot I heard something shatter I said oh my God sounds like they hit the window the house or something," said Brown.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, 12/23/13: Colorado Springs police are now telling FOX21 News that the 14 year old girl shot this morning has died. According to police, the girls stepfather shot her, thinking it was a home invasion. Police say she may have been sneaking back into her house. The incident happened about 5:57 Monday morning on the city's northeast side, near Peterson Road and North Carefree Circle. It was not clear how many shots were fired.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA, 12/23/13: Gwinnett County Police say a shooting Monday evening at a party in Lawrenceville was accidental. A male in his 20s showed up at Gwinnett Medical Center with a gunshot wound and the Gwinnett Police Department was called to investigate. “It looks like he was at a party and it was an accidental shooting and they hit him in the leg,” Sgt. Brian Doan said of the victim. “Everything is lining up from what the victim is saying that it was accidental.” The incident occurred at the Herrington Woods Apartments in Lawrenceville. Doan said the wound was non life-threatening.

HELENA, MT, 12/23/13: A 14-year-old boy is in stable condition at St. Peter’s Hospital after a friend accidentally shot him while hunting rabbits near MacDonald Pass, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said Monday evening. Powell County 911 received a call around 1 p.m. Monday from a male reporting that his younger brother had been shot in the leg by a friend, and that the three were en route to the hospital in Helena, Dutton said. The incident occurred between the road at the top of MacDonald Pass and Cromwell Dixon Campground, near the Powell and Lewis and Clark county boundary. At the hospital, the injured boy told a Lewis and Clark County deputy that incident occurred when a 15-year-old female friend tripped while crossing a cattle guard, according to Dutton. Her rifle discharged, striking him in the right thigh, he said.

FRANKLIN CO., KS, 12/23/13: A 14-year-old Pomona boy was not seriously injured when he shot himself in the foot Monday morning in a hunting mishap. The youth was hunting rabbits about 11:44 a.m. on his family’s property in rural Franklin County when he accidentally shot himself in the right foot with a small caliber rifle, according to a sheriff’s report.

SEVEN SPRINGS, NC, 12/23/13: The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office says the accidental discharge of a gun has left one man dead and another charged. Deputies were dispatched to 855 Smith Grady Road, Seven Springs at 1:10 p.m. Monday in reference to a shooting incident. Deputies arrived on scene and found a male victim dead from a gunshot wound. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Randall Thomas Lewis. Deputies say he died of an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Sheriffs' detectives say the investigation and determined that Lewis and 19-year-old Michael Bradley Rouse were engaged in horseplay while Rouse held a semi-automatic handgun. Rouse reportedly pointed the handgun at the victim believing the gun had the safety engaged. The gun was then fired and a bullet struck Lewis.

FRANKLIN, KY, 12/23/13: A 5-year-old girl was injured Monday after an accidental shooting in Simpson County, according to Simpson County Sheriff’s Detective Eddie Lawson. Deputies were called to The Medical Center at Franklin around 4 p.m. Monday, where a 5-year-old girl had pellet wounds on her cheek, chest and hands, Lawson said. The girl had been at a family friend’s home on 5969 Scottsville Road in Franklin with her father, brother and other adults and children. Everyone was in the garage, and the adults were working on ATVs. The kids were playing around a pool table. “Apparently, somebody had left a loaded shotgun on a pool table,” Lawson said. “We think maybe one of the children pulled the trigger of the shotgun, completely unintentional.” The pool table and the items on the table seemed to have absorbed most of the shotgun blast, Lawson said. The girl was the only person injured. “We are ruling it as an accidental shooting,” Lawson said. “There’s nothing to indicate there was any criminal intent.”

HAMDEN, CT, 12/23/13: A 23-year-old man who shot himself in the leg on Monday initially told police that someone else did it, police said. Officers who responded to the corner of Concord and Garden streets about 9:30 p.m. for the reported shooting found Bobby McCrea suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. McCrea and his friends told the officers that an individual driving a specific vehicle was responsible for the shooting, police said. However an investigation determined that the wound was self-inflicted, according to police.

SPANISH FORT, AL, 12/24/13: Police are investigating an apparent hunting accident that left one man with a gunshot wound to his leg in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, officials said. Around 12:05 p.m., the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department got a call from a cell phone reporting the shooting, said MFRD spokesman Steve Huffman. The caller, who has not been identified, said he and a friend were hunting on Upper Crabb Creek when one of them was accidentally shot. It's unclear whether the injured man or his friend made the call. The victim told authorities he and his friend had been hunting for hogs when his friend accidentally shot him. The Mobile Police Department and the Alabama Marine Police are performing a routine investigation of the incident, Huffman said.

EAST LAMPETER TOWNSHIP, PA, 12/24/13: A 2-month-old baby girl is dead after police say she was accidentally killed when a gun was fired by a member of her family. Lancaster County District Attorney, Craig Stedman was at a loss for words when he spoke with us earlier this evening. Stedman says it’s absolutely devastating, but even worse is the timing. One day before Christmas. It happened here at 2165 Old Philadelphia Pike just before 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. “Obviously it’s an incredibly disturbing set of circumstances,” says Lancaster County District Attorney, Craig Stedman. Stedman says the one gunshot fired from a handgun was enough to kill a 2-month-old baby girl. “This is not random. It’s a family member who had possession of the gun. I’m not going to identify any names at this particular time because people are still being notified,” says Stedman.

ROCKY POINT, OK, 12/24/13: A woman was taken to the hospital after she was shot at a home in Wagoner County. Sheriff's deputies were called about 1 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 31000 block of East 683 Road in Rocky Point, Maj. Gary Handley said. According to authorities, a woman was wounded when a gun accidentally discharged inside the residence. She was transported by medics to Wagoner Community Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Handley said. The unidentified victim was then later taken to a Tulsa hospital for additional treatment.

COLUMBIA, MO, 12/24/13: A Columbia woman is recovering after being by struck by a bullet fired into a home on Christmas Eve. Police say several adults and children were in the house when the woman was wounded around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Several rounds were fired into the home, but only the 41-year-old woman was hit by a bullet that came through a wall. The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that police said were not life-threatening. A tracking dog from the Boone County Sheriff's Department was brought to the scene but was unable to lead officers to a suspect.

BROOKLYN, NY, 12/24/13: A drunken Brooklyn man playing with a gun shot his younger brother in the hip on Christmas Eve and then tried to dump the smoking pistol on a neighbor, officials said Thursday. “Take this,” boozed-up shooter Jose Miranda, 49, told his upstairs neighbor on Tuesday after shooting younger brother Gregorio Miranda-Cruz, 48, according to court papers. “I screwed up and made a mistake.” The two brothers had just returned to their apartment on Belvidere St. near Broadway in Bushwick around 11:30 p.m. following a night of drinking. Law enforcement sources said a soused Miranda pulled a Smith & Wesson 9-mm. handgun from his dresser as he looked for some clean clothes. Miranda told police he was aiming the gun at his bedroom wall when it went off, according to court papers. The bullet pierced Miranda-Cruz’s hip, nicked his bladder and lower intestine and exited his stomach. Authorities said Miranda immediately ran upstairs and tried to hand the gun to neighbor Jonathan Espinosa, 28. Espinosa wouldn’t take it, but Miranda left the loaded weapon on his neighbor’s stove before fleeing, officials said.

DELTONA, FL, 12/25/13: A Deltona man was killed Wednesday morning after he was shot in the chest while in his backyard. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said around 10 a.m. deputies were called to a home in the 3200 block of Cadehill Drive. When they arrived they found the 69-year-old man, whose name has not been released, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said they are working to determine whether he may have been struck by a stray bullet. The Sheriff’s Office said witnesses told them a neighbor built a shooting range with a raised berm and it’s possible that a stray bullet may have struck the victim. The man who may have fired the shot has been interviewed by deputies.

FRANKLIN, TN, 12/25/13: A four-year-old was shot in the hand Christmas morning in Williamson County. Officials with the Franklin Police Department said the incident occurred at 11:47 a.m. Wednesday near Cherokee Place in Franklin. According to investigators, the four-year-old was shot in the hand and as a result, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

FLINT, MI, 12/25/13: A 2-year-old boy was shot in the foot after a gun discharged on Christmas Day, according to a police report. The boy and his mother were at a residence in the 2500 block of Dakota around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25. He was jumping on the couch when a gun discharged, striking him in the right foot, the report said. The boy was taken to the hospital where he was listed in good condition. The report does not say how the gun discharged or if there were any arrests.

SPOKANE, WA, 12/25/13: A 12-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the lower leg Wednesday evening on East Jacobs Road north of Spokane Valley. Spokane County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an accidental shooting around 8:45 p.m. The boy and his grandfather were roughhousing together in the living room of a home on the 14000 block of East Jacobs Road when a handgun in a concealed holster on the grandfather’s belt went off, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The bullet went through the boy’s right calf. The injury wasn’t life-threatening, the Sheriff’s Office said, and the boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

DALLAS, TX, 12/25/13: Carmelino Cardona, 29, has been charged with two counts of deadly contact after he discharged a gun inside his apartment. He remains in the Dallas County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Cardona was fiddling with a pistol when he accidentally shot a bullet into two adjacent apartments at the Peterson Place Apartments in the 5400 block of Peterson Lane near Alpha Road, according to a police report. One of Cardona’s neighbors called police around 12:20 p.m. after a bullet came through his wall. The man thought it had come from next door, but responding officers discovered the bullet had gone through two apartments. Cardona told police he had been sitting at a table when his gun went off. The unloaded pistol was found on an upstairs dresser, police said. There were no reported injuries.

TUNKHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, PA, 12/25/13: State police at Towanda reported a 24-year-old Tunkhannock man accidentally shot himself while preparing to clean a Springfield Armory XD 9 mm semi-automatic pistol around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. The gun discharged and the round struck the man in the left lower thumb, exited his wrist area and reentered his lower forearm before exiting again approximately three inches farther down the forearm, state police. No further details were available.

LAKE CHARLES, LA, 12/26/13: A 20-year-old Lake Charles man is dead following a shooting Thursday morning. Authorities responded to an incident at a home near the corner of Louie and Ryan streets. An eyewitness told KPLC that the victim was working on his truck around 9 a.m. and started playing with his gun and accidentally shot himself. Deputy Coroner Zeb Johnson said there is no evidence of foul play, and they are investigating an accidental shooting.

ERIE, PA, 12/26/13: A man was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment after shooting himself in the leg this afternoon. Emergency responders were called to an apartment in the 1300 block of West Ninth Street shortly after noon on a report of a man who had shot himself. It appears the man shot himself while cleaning his gun, Erie police Capt. Aaron Wassell said.

NASHVILLE, TN, 12/26/13: A 14-year-old was taken to the hospital after telling police he shot himself in the foot. He was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital with minor injuries. The incident happened near the intersection of 14th Avenue North and Buchanan Street. Police say they were not able to find the gun, any casings or blood at the scene.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH, 12/26/13: Police say two people were wounded in the fingers when a gun accidentally discharged about 2 p.m. today on the East Side. A spokesman said the people were on East High Avenue and were slightly injured. Charges are not expected, the spokesman said.

BRIGHTON, MI, 12/26/13: Authorities say a man accidentally shot himself in a home improvement store with the gun he was legally carrying. WHMI-FM reports the 32-year-old man from the Livingston County community of Green Oak Township was shot in the buttocks Thursday evening at the Home Depot in Brighton. Police say it appears he was reaching for his wallet when he inadvertently grabbed the pistol and a shot fired. The man was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. Police say the man had a license to carry the concealed weapon and no charges will be filed.

FORT WORTH, TX, 12/26/13: Police say a man in is custody accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old boy in what the man claims was a mistake. Fort Worth police said they received a call of a shooting just before midnight Friday in the 3000 block of Hanger Avenue. A 24-year-old man told police he pulled out a handgun, that he didn't know was loaded, and shot a 14-year-old boy just above the left eye. Shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, both police and the boy's family confirmed that he has now died.

SWIFTON, AR, 12/26/13: Law enforcement is investigating the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy. According to reports, the Jackson County Sheriff's responded to a 911 call around 7:15 Thursday night in reference to a shooting incident in Swifton. Officers arrived at the 500 block of Main Street where they found Isaac Odell Williams dead with an apparent gunshot wound to the face. Williams' body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, but at this time, the shooting appears to be accidental.

RUSHSYLVANIA, OH, 12/26/13: Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to Mary Rutan Hospital about 5:50 p.m. Thursday in reference to a patient who was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound. They spoke with medical staff and also the patient, Shane R. Kramer, 39, of 1354 E. County Road 113, Rushsylvania. Mr. Kramer said he had been drinking earlier in the day, and he had been cleaning a firearm at his residence. He said he was not very familiar with the firearm, and he thought it was completely unloaded. However, in the process of cleaning the gun, it discharged a round into his leg.

AXTELL, NE, 12/26/13: A 17-year-old was transported to a hospital Thursday night following an accidental shooting near Axtell. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, five juveniles had driven out to an abandoned farmhouse north of Axtell Thursday night. The two females in the group and one of the males left to explore while the other two males stayed inside the pickup. After returning, the three found the doors locked to the pickup. Officials say the male outside the pickup was joking around when a 22-caliber handgun he was carrying accidentally discharged, hitting one of the teens inside the truck. The injured teen was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries.

SPOKANE, WA, 12/26/13: At Justin Werle's first court appearance Friday, police said they were seeking the 28-year-old for his alleged involvement in a shooting Thursday when he walked into Sunset Grocery. According to the affidavit, the initial call was from Werle’s brother, reporting he accidentally fired his weapon. Police said they saw the suspect in the grocery store and found a sawed off shotgun in his possession. They arrested Werle for attempted first-degree robbery and second-degree felon in possession of a firearm. Werle has nine previous felonies including riot with a deadly weapon and third degree assault according to officials. Police said he was also arrested in April in Browne’s Addition for shooting a person in the head. That victim survived. Still, it is unclear whether he planned Thursday to rob the store. Sunset grocery was robbed twice during the ten days leading up to the incident. Werle’s mother said her son was not involved. She said he’s friends with a Sunset Grocery employee.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, 12/27/13: Colorado Springs police arrested a man after he allegedly fired a gun into a neighboring apartment early Friday morning. According to police, Aleksey Kolyushin, 27, was taken into custody shortly before 2 a.m. on suspicion of illegal discharge and prohibited use of a firearm and reckless endangerment. Officers were called to the apartments at 4460 Burton Way when a man awoke to the sound of a gunshot. He called police and reported that he heard the loud blast and found a bullet hole in the bedroom wall near his bed, a report said. No body was injured and Kolyushin was taken to the El Paso County jail. UPDATE: Nygren says police told him his apartment neighbor was cleaning his gun when it went off.

LEXINGTON, KY, 12/27/13: A 19-year old Lexington teen was cleaning a gun when it went off hitting him in the hip, Friday afternoon. A friend of the victim who was in the house at the time said the teen was cleaning his girlfriend's small handgun that she got for Christmas, and didn't know there was a bullet loaded in the chamber when he pulled back the slide, making the gun go off. Maggie Evans said the girlfriend was taking a nap in the bed next to the teen when the accident happened. "He got a gun cleaning kit this morning and was excited to open it up and clean it out," Evans said.

WILKES-BARRE, PA, 12/27/13: Wilkes-Barre police are investigating a shooting at the Sherman Hills Apartments after two area residents showed up at a New Jersey hospital on Friday claiming they had been shot by accident. Lashawn Burgman, 31, of Wyoming, and Catherine Thomas, 23, of Sherman Hills’ Building 308, told police they drove more than 100 miles after getting accidentally shot because they were “afraid” and wanted to avoid a police investigation, according to a search warrant application filed in court Friday. But their plan fell apart after authorities at East Orange General Hospital contacted Newark, N.J., police, who in turn called Wilkes-Barre police, according to an affidavit filed in support of the warrant. The pair told investigators they had been accidentally shot in Thomas’ apartment, where she lives with a small child, police said. Thomas told police she was lying on top of Burgman when his gun went off, shooting her in the foot and him in the leg, the affidavit says. Both injuries required emergency surgery, police said. When Burgman was questioned, he told police he was pulling a .380-caliber handgun from his waistband when it accidentally fired, police said.

SOUTH BEND, IN, 12/27/13: A South Bend teenager was shot in the foot Friday afternoon. Police were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Gladstone Avenue around 3:05 p.m. The 17-year-old female was found inside with a gunshot wound to the right foot. According to paramedics, she is being treated at a local hospital for a serious foot injury. South Bend Police say the shooting is accidental. Investigators were able to recover the firearm involved in the incident.

KERNERSVILLE, NC, 12/27/13: Kernersville Police say they are investigating after a gun discharged inside a restaurant Friday afternoon. Officers said they responded to Palenque Mexican Restaurant on North Main Street at 1:18 p.m. Video from the restaurant showed a man attempting to pay at the register when he dropped a handgun and it discharged. Police told WFMY News 2 the round from the gun struck the counter at the register, then a half wall before entering the ceiling. No one was injured during the incident.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, 12/27/13: A man is in the hospital after being shot in leg last night - possibly by himself. Police responded to a call in the 1600 block of West Villaret Boulevard, where family members told them the man was shot at another location, news reports say. Police, however, found a weapon in the home and believe the man might have shot himself on accident.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ, 12/27/13: A man, appearing to be in his early 20s, shot himself just above the ankle Friday evening in a possible accident on Pink Rock Road and was taken away with a potential limb threatening situation, a Lake Havasu Fire Department official said. Fire Department officials received the call of a man shooting his foot out in the desert off of Paso De Oro Drive at about 5:15 p.m. Arriving on the scene, Battalion Chief Mike Quijada said he learned that the man, who was possibly a soldier on leave, had a 12-gauge shotgun pointed down at his side and the gun went off striking just above the left ankle. The incident occurred while the man was about one-eighth of a mile from Paso De Oro Drive on Pink Rock Road in the desert, Quijada said. Another person heard the scream and the blast and helped treat the young man before help arrived, he said. MORE: Shane Roe, 20, shot himself with his shotgun on Friday while he and a girlfriend were target shooting on Pink Rock Road off of Paso De Oro Drive. According to Mohave County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Trish Carter, Roe was kneeling down in position to take another shot at a target with his 12-gauge shotgun. The gun, which was facing downward, accidentally went off and shot him just above the left ankle. Roe’s girlfriend, who was with him, was away at the time getting more ammo but called authorities when she discovered the accident.

EGNAR, CO, 12/27/13: A 28-year-old Egnar man is dead following an apparent accidental shooting that occured while he was hunting for coyotes late Friday night. According to San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters, Trenten Tyler Sutherland, 28, was shot and killed while hunting with two other friends on his property near Egnar. Masters said at about 11 p.m. Sutherland, and the two other men, were walking and looking for coyotes when a "mistake" occurred. He said there was "something" that was misidentified as a coyote and Sutherland was "accidentally shot and killed." "All indications are that this is tragic accidental shooting," Masters said.

First off I believe ALL Automatic and Semi Automatic weapons should be BANNED/ Destroyed.

I also think that the second Amendment should be a bit more technical with the whole " Right to bear arms".

For me personally I had my fair share of weapons for this lifetime. I wouldn't care if I never touched one again. Unless I absolutely positively needed to in order to pick up groceries. Then I would take my Lee-Enfield Bolt-Action rifle.

South Carolina 15-year-old fatally shoots 12-year-old girl in the head with grandpa’s gun

A 15-year-old boy is in custody in South Carolina after shooting and killing a 12-year-old girl with his grandfather’s handgun over the weekend.

According to WYFF, Laurens County deputies found Hope Alexandria Fair with a gunshot to the head at a mobile home Sunday night.

Lt. Jawarski Shelton explained that the 12-year-old girl had been visiting a friend at the mobile home when the 15-year-old suspect came inside the home with the gun at around 6:30 p.m.. The 15-year-old boy originally told police that the weapon had been fired by someone else.

“(He) called the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office stating that he had walked into a residence after hearing a gunshot and found a 12-year-old female on the floor with a gunshot wound,” Shelton noted.

But a second caller, the victim’s friend, told police that her 15-year-old cousin had been holding the gun when it discharged.

“Eventually, he admitted that he was actually holding the gun when it fired and that he was actually loading a magazine into the weapon,” Shelton explained. “When he pulled the slide back, the gun fired.”

The pistol was recovered after a search of a wooded area near the home. Investigators determined that the suspect had taken the weapon from his grandfather’s vehicle, but did not have permission.

The 15-year-old boy was being held the Department of Juvenile Justice and will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. He was not expected to be tried as an adult.

Michelle Fair, the victim’s mother, described her daughter as “strong” and “creative.”

“She was definitely one of a kind,” the mother recalled. “She was so beautiful.”

“I know it was an accident, and he’ll have to pay for that accident for a long time,” Michelle Fair said of the 15-year-old boy. “I feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for him. I’ll lose my daughter forever. They’re going to lose their kid for a long time, too.”

Breanna Fair, the victim’s sister, told WHNS that she was still trying to make sense of the shooting.

“Someone doesn’t need to leave a gun laying out where kids can grab it,” she said.

BS! I agree that there is no need for a civilian to own a full auto but semi auto? What needs to happen is to enforce the laws that are on the books not add new ones. If you own a firearm and have children you should teach them the safety in handling them. I have a 6 year old that has more safety sense with rifles than some adults I know. He knows how to strip and is a good shot with an AR-15 (only with me present) In my house firearms are secured but are not voodoo, and because of this if he sees a firearm he is not tempted to "play" with it. He got a Red Ryder of his own for Christmas and he asked for a trigger lock for it to keep it safe. :excited:

New Year's Gun Celebrations Lead To Injuries

There are probably better times to brandish a firearm than on a boozy holiday that reaches its crescendo with a wild midnight celebration. But that's how some people ushered in the new year this week, and they have the wounds to show for it.

Walter Moore, 22, was arrested in Denver for allegedly shooting a teenaged girl in the hand shortly after midnight on Wednesday in what police are speculating was an act of "New Year's Eve revelry" gone awry. The girl's injury is not life threatening, but police are investigating Moore for aggravated assault.

Over in Port Arthur, Texas, a 39-year-old man shot himself in the foot after attempting to ring in the new year by firing of his handgun. No charges will be filed against the man, who authorities said was "exhibiting signs of intoxication" at the time. His injuries are also non-life threatening.

A Florida man who celebrated the holiday in a similar fashion may not be so lucky. The unidentified man is now fighting for his life after reportedly shooting himself in the head around midnight in Jacksonville, Fla. He was said to be playing with his gun during a gathering with family members inside an apartment.

One of the largest producers of gun magazines in the U.S. is leaving Colorado because of its new gun laws and moving its operations to Texas and Wyoming.

Magpul Industries, based in Erie, Colorado, announced Thursday that it was moving its production, distribution and shipping operations to Cheyenne and its headquarters to Texas, making good on a vow it made to leave Colorado during last year's heated gun control debate
